Consider the Lord's words concerning Job:
And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” Job 1:8
After many trials and much questioning the Lord answers Job by drawing a line between the Creator and the created, the Potter and the clay. Then in chapter 40:1-5 we read this:
1 And the Lord said to Job:
2 “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty?
He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
4 “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
twice, but I will proceed no further.”
So what was Job's attitude towards himself?
Job 42:1-6
42:1 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
2 “I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3 ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
4 ‘Hear, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.’
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you;
6 therefore I despise myself,
and repent in dust and ashes.”
Too often we think to highly of ourselves and our pride cheapens and spits on the righteousness that has been freely given to us by the Father. We speak of all of the benefits of salvation without ever reconciling the grace of God with wretched sinners.
How often do we hear with our ears and yet never see the glory of God with our eyes. Even more so, when God does allow us to see His work what is our reaction? Do you despise yourself and repent in dust and ashes?
Philippians 2:5-11
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
If the Lord God humbled Himself unto the point of a human death, then how dare we exalt ourselves as worthy of so great a salvation.
Hebrews 2:1-3
2:1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
O' wretched sinner.... To God be the Glory
