Child Abandonment

There have been many instances in the news where a mother has abandoned her newborn child. Sometimes in front of a home, maybe a hospital parking lot or even in a garbage dumpster. This makes us angry. We become outraged at the selfishness and irresponsibility of the poor excuse of a mother.

How often does the church do the same thing. Someone comes to Christ in repentance and we celebrate, we baptize them and we put them in a Sunday School class. But how often do we really take them along and personally show them how to feed on the spiritual milk of the Word. If they have recently been born again, then they are truly infants in Christ. They do not know how to walk spiritually yet.

Like a newborn baby needs someone to care for them, to clothe them, to clean them and to feed them; so a new Christian needs to be clothed, cleansed and fed by the Word of God. They can not do this on their own at first, they must learn - from the spiritually mature.

Go therefore and make disciples.

I am thankful,by the way to be part of a church that takes discipleship seriously...from day one.

True brother. Perhaps even more reckless is the fact that many are not just practicing "child abandonment", they are practicing spiritual abortion.

Instead of making disciples, many are promoting emotional, non-cross centered conversions which in turn lead to apostasy or spiritual abortion.

2 Peter 2:21-22
21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

Lord of all grace, I can think of numerous people in the past that I myself have lead down a path of self confirmation and prayer based regeneration. Lord, forgive me for my lack of understanding and grant me grace that I may point people to the cross and not a method or a program. Let me always encourage those who profess Christ to recognize that it is the Spirit that bears witness that they are a child of God and not some man-made certificate or a date written in a Bible.

Matthew 28:18-20

18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19"Go therefore and make DISCIPLES of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

NASB (emphasis on disciple added)
